Stone Mountain rises in the state of Georgia in the southeastern United States. An impressive granite dome rising out of Georgia’s Piedmont, its elevation rises about 650 feet, or 198 meters above the surrounding landscape, but over 1600 feet, or 485 meters above sea level. The majestic granite is some 2 miles (3.2km) long, and is about 7 miles (11.25 km) around at its base. Its natural history found it being formed deep underground from cooling magma, and the massive granite dome was exposed by erosion over geologic time.

Such granite outcrops in the area foster and support distinctive plant communities, including species such as Georgia oak along the edges, and other plants specially adapted to drought and thin soil. Stone Mountain is part of a larger natural setting rather than just a bare rock dome. Stone Mountain Park covers about 3,200 acres (1,295 hectares), making it a substantial green space in the metropolitan Atlanta region.
